Torchlight II is a hack-and-slash isometric role-playing game developed and published by Runic Games in 2012. As the sequel to the 2010 game Torchlight, it continues the story from the original title, focusing on the Alchemist—now the main antagonist corrupted by the ancient dragon Ordrak. The game is available on Windows, Linux, OS X, and Xbox 360, with planned releases for Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 4, and Xbox One by Panic Button.
Story and Characters: Torchlight II is set some time after the events of the first game. The ancient dragon Ordrak, who had tainted the Ember ore and its users, has been defeated. However, the Alchemist, who stole the source of Ordrak’s power, remains afflicted by the Ember Blight. Believing others may also suffer from the curse, the Alchemist plans to merge the dragon’s heart with the elemental guardians’ power to eradicate all Ember and rid himself and others of the blight. The elemental guardians are crucial to the world’s balance, and their harm could have dire consequences. As the player, you must stop the Alchemist and protect the guardians.
Gameplay and Game Modes: Torchlight II offers addictive and dynamic gameplay through expansive open areas teeming with various enemies. This contrasts with the first game’s confined mines. Players can choose from one of four classes, each with three distinct skill trees, and develop their characters by completing quests and battling foes. Players can also select a companion pet that fights alongside them, can be sent to town to sell loot and purchase items, thus saving the player from frequent trips to town.
The game features a New Game Plus system, allowing players to restart the game while retaining their character, gold, and items, but facing stronger monsters and discovering more powerful loot. Additionally, the long-awaited cross-platform multiplayer co-op enables players to team up with friends across different platforms.
Reception: Torchlight II received positive reviews from both critics and players, selling over 1 million copies in 2012. It is generally regarded as an improvement over its predecessor, enhancing and refining the successful elements of the original while introducing new features.
While the game does not significantly innovate within the genre, it excels in its execution of familiar RPG and hack-and-slash mechanics. Strengths noted include numerous random encounters, a wide range of unique abilities, an affordable price, low system requirements, and the addition of a highly anticipated multiplayer mode.
