High-Definition Remaster
Final Fantasy XII: The Zodiac Age is a high-definition remaster of the previously Japan-exclusive Final Fantasy XII International Zodiac Job System. This remastered edition features enhanced visuals, an updated soundtrack, and improved overall technical performance. Celebrated as a Game of the Year (GOTY) title, it has also received several accolades for the quality of its remastered content.
The Zodiac Job System
The growth system in Final Fantasy XII: The Zodiac Age is based on the Zodiac Job System, which introduces a new layer of depth to character development. Inspired by the twelve astrological signs, this system allows players to assign characters to specific jobs, such as Black Mage, Knight, Monk, and more. Each Zodiac sign corresponds to a unique job with its own License Board, providing a customized progression path for each character. This is a significant evolution from the original Final Fantasy XII, which featured a single License Board for all characters.
Combat and Characters
Unlike some of its predecessors, Final Fantasy XII allows players to control all members of their party freely, while also incorporating guest characters controlled by AI. A standout feature of the game is the “Gambit” system, which enables players to program their party members’ actions in various scenarios. For example, players can set a healer to automatically cast a healing spell when an ally’s health drops below 50%.
Additionally, players can summon powerful creatures known as Espers to assist in battle. These summoned beings, fueled by Mist—a mystical energy—become active participants in combat, similar to the summon system in Final Fantasy X, where summoned monsters are directly controllable rather than performing one-off cinematic attacks.
