Final Fantasy VIII is a direct continuation of the beloved Final Fantasy series, introducing a completely new narrative compared to Final Fantasy VII. This installment follows the journey of two Balamb Garden students, set against the backdrop of an intense battle between good and evil. Now optimized for PC with Steam achievements!
The Story and Characters
Final Fantasy VIII centers on Squall Leonhart, a stoic and independent cadet from Balamb Garden. His journey intertwines with that of Rinoa Heartilly, a spirited and optimistic young woman. Together, along with their companions, they must thwart the sinister plans of Edea the Sorceress, who threatens to bring devastation to their homeland.
As is typical of the series, Final Fantasy VIII introduces players to a cast of distinctive characters. Squall, the lone wolf, is dedicated to his mission and will stop at nothing to protect his world. Rinoa, in contrast, brings warmth and positivity to the group, creating a dynamic contrast that plays a crucial role in their relationship. However, the rivalry between Squall and Seifer Almasy, a proud and ambitious adversary, adds another layer of tension—both in battle and in their pursuit of Rinoa’s affection. Players will find themselves immersed in this conflict as they guide Squall and his team to overcome the treacherous Edea.
Gameplay
Final Fantasy VIII retains the beloved mechanics of the series, featuring turn-based combat, world exploration, and mission-based progression. The game is divided into three familiar modes: the world map, field, and combat modes.
The combat system is built upon the “Active Time Battle” system, a staple of previous Final Fantasy titles. Characters take turns exchanging moves and attacks until one side is defeated, adding a strategic element to the battles.
Transportation options in the game include traveling on foot, piloting airships, and riding the iconic Chocobos, which can be encountered throughout the game world.
A notable addition to the series in Final Fantasy VIII is the “Guardian Force” system. This monster-summoning system is based on the “junctioning” mechanic, allowing players to attach various Guardian Forces (GFs) to their characters. This enables the use of Magic and powerful GF attacks. Unlike previous entries, spells are no longer cast using traditional “magic points”; instead, they are drawn from a stockpile and used as needed in combat. These systems offer extensive customization options for players to tailor their party’s abilities.
