Dark Souls Remastered includes the main game alongside the Artorias of the Abyss DLC.
Known for its formidable difficulty, Dark Souls delivers thrilling and challenging encounters, especially against powerful bosses. The remastered edition, launched in May 2018, introduced enhanced graphics, improved frame rates, and updated online features.
What’s New: The remastered version brings several enhancements. Visual improvements include native 4K resolution at 60fps on PC, a significant upgrade from the original 720p. Multiplayer has been overhauled with dedicated servers replacing peer-to-peer connections. The player count has increased from 4 to 6, enabled after using a specific in-game item.
Matchmaking has been refined to align guest player levels with the host and includes options for global matchmaking toggling and password-based matchmaking, as seen in Dark Souls III. Arena mode now supports 3 and 6-player deathmatches with randomized respawn points. Core gameplay mechanics have also been enhanced, allowing for customizable button configurations, selectable item counts, and convenient bonfire placements next to Vamos the Blacksmith.
Story and Characters: The game’s premise, unveiled in the opening cutscene, recounts the era ruled by dragons until Gwyn discovered the “First Flame” and used it to secure “Lord Souls,” ending the dragon reign and initiating the Age of Fire. When the flame waned, Gwyn sacrificed himself, unleashing the curse that causes certain humans, including the protagonist, to revive after death. As the chosen undead, players journey through the world, battling monstrous foes.
Gameplay: Dark Souls Remastered is a third-person action role-playing game that emphasizes meticulous exploration and strategic combat. Set in an interconnected open world with a central hub, players can freely explore while encountering locked areas that require specific conditions to unlock. Bonfires serve as checkpoints, restoring health and healing charges, though respawning all enemies except bosses and mini-bosses.
Introduced in the game is the concept of “Humanity,” where dying reverts players to a hollow state, with the only recovery method being to consume an item of the same name. Human form allows interaction with other players for assistance, while progression is possible in hollow form. Losing items upon death necessitates reclaiming them at the death location, adding a layer of challenge to gameplay.
Combat in Dark Souls involves managing stamina, which depletes with each action and regenerates during breaks, demanding tactical prowess in every encounter.
Online Features: Online play is integral to Dark Souls, with limited direct communication options beyond gestures. Orange soapstones enable leaving brief messages for other players in the same area, fostering cooperative or competitive interactions.
Player Reception: The remastered version garnered mixed reviews. Positive feedback focused on retaining the essence of the beloved original game, with critics lauding improved performance and visuals. However, some felt the remaster lacked substantial changes to entice those familiar with the original. For newcomers or those who missed the initial release, Dark Souls Remastered offers immediate access upon purchasing the Steam key.
