Continuing the harrowing journey of the Pict warrior Senua, this latest installment promises to deliver even more intense psychological and mythical experiences.

Storyline

Set in the 10th century, Senua’s Saga: Hellblade II picks up where the first game left off. Although Senua has not fully conquered her inner demons, she has learned to manage them with greater control. For those unfamiliar with the series, Senua suffers from psychosis, inherited from her mother and exacerbated by a tumultuous upbringing under a tyrannical father. Her reality is plagued by visual and auditory hallucinations.

In this sequel, Senua willingly surrenders herself to Nordic slavers and is taken to Iceland in search of her abducted people. Upon arrival, she discovers that the barrier between worlds has been shattered, allowing giants to terrorize the land. The Icelandic people attempt to appease these giants by sacrificing slaves. Senua’s journey is fraught with dangers inspired by Nordic mythology, as well as the haunting manifestations of her troubled mind.

Gameplay

Senua’s Saga: Hellblade II blends action-adventure with elements of puzzle-solving and psychological horror. Players will navigate and interact with a richly detailed environment, solving various puzzles and manipulating their surroundings in innovative ways.

Combat is real-time and dynamic, interspersed with quick-time events. For example, Senua might be required to press a button quickly to prevent a fatal blow when she is downed in battle. Permadeath is a critical gameplay feature, adding a layer of tension and consequence.

True to its predecessor, Hellblade II eschews a traditional HUD. Instead of maps or health bars, the game relies on narrative elements, Senua’s hallucinations, and her interactions with the ominous figure known as The Darkness to guide players. The Furies, a manifestation of Senua’s psychosis, also play a role in navigating the game’s challenges.
