Sand Land: A New Adventure Inspired by Akira Toriyama
For fans of Akira Toriyama, the legendary creator behind the beloved Dragon Ball series, there’s a new gem to discover. Toriyama’s lesser-known manga, Sand Land, has been adapted into a game, marking the last project the artist was involved in before his passing.
Game Overview
Sand Land is an action-adventure RPG developed by Keishu Minami and published by Bandai Namco Entertainment. Released on April 26th, 2024, the game is available on PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X, and PC. It features striking comic book-style graphics reminiscent of Toriyama’s other works and those from Telltale Games, powered by Unreal Engine 5.
Storyline
Set in a post-apocalyptic desert world plagued by drought and water scarcity, Sand Land follows the demon prince Beelzebub. Alongside his companions—Sheriff Rao, Ann, and a demon named Thief—Beelzebub embarks on a quest to find the mythical Legendary Spring. Their journey is fraught with peril as they encounter various hostile characters along the way.
Gameplay
Sand Land offers third-person perspective (TPP) gameplay with a focus on melee combat. Players control Beelzebub, while AI manages the other team members. Combat features two types of attacks: fast but weak light attacks and slow, powerful heavy attacks. Players can also build and customize vehicles from parts found during their travels. These vehicles are essential for navigating the desert and engaging in tank battles.
Another key element is establishing and expanding a base. NPCs encountered throughout the game can join your base, some of whom have supernatural abilities. The base and its quarters can be customized and decorated to suit your preferences.
The game’s RPG elements include exploration, major quests, and various side activities such as races and bounty hunting. Water is a crucial resource, as it restores Beelzebub’s HP and is essential for survival.
