About Atomic Heart
Atomic Heart is an action-adventure first-person shooter developed by the Russian studio Mundfish. Set in an alternate timeline of Communist Russia, the game explores a world where Soviet technological advancements have unlocked extraordinary powers. As the player, you assume the role of Agent P-3, dispatched to investigate a remote facility that has mysteriously gone dark. Combining elements of action-RPG and survival-horror, Atomic Heart offers multiple approaches to combat and exploration. Initial responses to the game have been positive.
Gameplay
The gameplay in Atomic Heart balances combat and RPG mechanics. As you explore the abandoned facility, you’ll gather resources to craft makeshift melee weapons and utilize various firearms. Resources can be collected from the environment and enemy remains.
The game features a range of mutated enemies, each presenting unique challenges. Sometimes, engaging enemies directly may not be the best approach; stealth tactics can be crucial. The enemies are connected through a collective consciousness known as the Kollektiv, which can call for reinforcements when you’re detected. Strategic planning is essential to avoid being overwhelmed.
Storyline
Set in 1995, in an alternate timeline where advanced technologies like the Internet and holograms were developed earlier than in our world, the USSR is using secret facilities to create top-secret weaponry. When one of these facilities goes silent, the KGB sends their top operative, codename P-3, to investigate. As P-3 delves into the abandoned research stations and test sites, they uncover the facility’s dark secrets and the reasons behind its sudden silence.
Reception
Atomic Heart received a positive reception upon release. The game’s trailer, unveiled in July 2018, captivated audiences with its atmospheric setting and gameplay elements. Many have drawn comparisons to Irrational Games’ BioShock series, earning Atomic Heart the nickname “Soviet BioShock.”
