Root: The Digital Adaptation of the Award-Winning Board Game
Step into the wild wood with Root, the acclaimed board game of asymmetric woodland warfare now available for cross-platform digital play. Use a blend of subtle strategy and bold tactics to lead your chosen forest faction to victory. Root is a game of adventure and conflict where 2 to 4 players vie for dominance over a sprawling wilderness.
Story
The Marquise de Cat has seized control of the great woodland, seeking to exploit its resources. Under her rule, the forest’s diverse inhabitants have united in opposition. This Alliance aims to bolster their strength and undermine the Cat’s dominance. They might even enlist the help of the Vagabonds—wandering adventurers who traverse the forest’s treacherous paths. Some Vagabonds remember the days when the great birds of prey ruled the woods.
Game Factions
- Marquise de Cat: The recent conqueror of the forest, the Marquise de Cat excels in engine building and logistical management. By gathering Wood, she constructs Workshops, Sawmills, and Recruiters to earn victory points. With the largest army in Root, the Marquise must navigate more than just brute force to secure the forest.
- The Eyrie Dynasties: Once the rulers of the woodland, the Eyrie Dynasties now seek to reclaim their former glory. They aim to capture territory and build Roosts, all while avoiding internal strife. Each Eyrie leader has unique abilities and specialties. Choosing the right leader at the right moment can spell the difference between victory and defeat.
- Woodland Alliance: Opposed to any form of tyranny, whether from the Marquise or the Eyrie, the Woodland Alliance champions the will of the people. Masters of guerrilla warfare, they start slowly but can become a formidable force in the late game—provided they can undermine the other factions effectively.
- The Vagabond: A versatile character who can be an adventurer, trader, thief, or a mix of all three. As the Vagabond, you explore the map’s dense woods and hidden areas to discover items and ruins. You can trade with or aid the warring factions, all while pursuing your own secret quests.
Gameplay
In Root, each faction offers a unique gameplay experience, with different strategies and objectives. The digital adaptation captures the complexity and excitement of the original board game, allowing players to engage in intricate woodland warfare from anywhere. Whether you’re building an empire, reclaiming a lost throne, supporting revolutionary efforts, or pursuing personal goals, Root offers a rich, strategic experience for all players.
